Beach Dive, Nicholas Canyon, Saturday, February 11th, 2012
...By Mike Gray
Date: Saturday, February 11 Time: 9:00 am Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate Parking: $8 credit Card
Nicholas canyon is a great dive site with fairly easy entry. There are a few different options for this dive. First will be to dive the outer wall and travel East at around 45 feet. The structure here is a rocky reef with a vertical wall rising up to 15 feet or higher. Traveling down are more large rocky structures with plenty of cracks and crevices. Directly out from the sea wall, I have found a smaller rocky reef in 55 feet. The outer wall has plenty of sea life, on one dive I have spotted as many as 9 angel sharks in the sand and other times bumped into torpedo rays, halibut, and bat rays. There are plenty of fish and lobster on the rock wall and one of my favorites, the white spotted rose anemone is also common here. Another option to dive is the kelp beds to the West which is a shorter swim to lower reefs starting at 25 feet and with a few pinnacles out deeper.
The dive is being rated as beginner to intermediate, there is a staircase that leads to the beach which is not too difficult and divers have an option of a sandy entry directly at the bottom of the staircase or a rockier entry East of the lifeguard tower.
Directions: Take PCH 5-7 miles past Zuma. Look for a yellow gated entry and sign just before you get to the hill going down toward Leo Carrillo.
